Upper Perry Bridge Demolition

Contractor: Holm II, Inc.

This project consisted of replacing the two existing concrete bridges on Interstate 84 over the Grand Ronde River west of La Grande with two steel plate girder bridges. McGee Engineering was responsible for developing a demolition and containment plan. Working with the contractor to understand the capabilities of their equipment and crew we were able to develop a plan that allowed for a safe and efficient demolition process. The contractor’s goal was to perform as much of the work as possible while positioned on the bridge before moving down below to finish. We began by carefully reviewing the as-built plans for the existing bridges to gain a firm understanding of how they were designed and constructed. We then proceeded to analyze the existing bridges for equipment loading during demolition. This is a challenging process as we must evaluate a constantly changing structure as it is being weakened. . Our plan allowed the contractor to demolish the existing bridges on schedule.

In addition to the demo plan we were also tasked with designing the containment structure to protect the Grande Ronde River from construction and demolition activities. We made use of the contractor’s steel inventory in order to save time and money. The containment was founded on footings placed on the banks and in the river. The platform was decked with heavy timbers which were already owned by the contractor.

Existing column with a skeletonized portion of the superstructure still attached.
